Anthony Cecil Copple “Tony”
15 Feb. 1941 – 09 Oct. 2023
Obituary Overview
Tony was ready for heaven. So God opened the door and freed him from pain forever. He’s now in heaven’s worship team playing guitar as he did with so many ministries. Tony died at the age of 82. Beloved husband of 24 years to Laurie-Ann. Greatly loved by his children James (Kathy) and his late daughter Debbie (Bryan). Proud granddad of Jasmin and Sagan, as well as unseen great grandchildren overseas. Survived by his siblings Dianne (Mike), Neesa, and the late Phil (Maureen). He will be missed by so many over the world, especially in South Africa, Mozambique, Canada, US and the UK.
Tony was an active part of so many communities: Prison ministry, Alpha Canada, Ottawa Anglican Cursillo Movement, ARM Canada, GCUC, St. Paul’s Anglican Kanata, BHCC, WCG (S Africa), Hillsong Somerset West and Catch the Fire Toronto. He ministered through worship teams, media teams, CKCU, Good News Christian Ministries (radio/podcast ministry), Iris Ministries Canada/Iris Western Cape, Legacy Relay, MasterPeace Academy, My Father’s House Worcester, Ottawa Beatles site, and more. He was born and raised in the UK, and based in Ottawa for many years. He was in the Royal Navy, where he was exposed to asbestos. This eventually caused the mesothelioma that was part of his suffering. He worked as a computer salesman, and later a financial planner for Investors Group in Ottawa.
After four years serving as an Iris missionary in Worcester, South Africa, he returned to Canada with Laurie-Ann to care for his father-in-law Steve in Etobicoke. He poured his heart, soul and faith into those he met, in his gentle, merciful way. He is loved and will be greatly missed.
Friends and family that could come gathered at Tony’s memorial at Glendale Funeral Home in Etobicoke at 1810 Albion Rd (near Hwy 27) on Thursday, October 26, from 1 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life in the Glendale Chapel and simple refreshments afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you may consider donations to be made to young “B’s” education in Cape Town. Tony was helping to supplement her scholarship, and she is studying to be a teacher. This would honour Tony’s legacy and was something near and dear to his heart. Donations may be emailed to Laurie-Ann at kootenaysprayer@gmail.com. There is still need for her education, accommodation, food and school supplies.

Tony Copple’s eulogy – “A Life Poured Out” Laurie-Ann Copple – October 26, 2023
If you knew Tony when he was full of life, he was a non-stop whirlwind. He did not just sit and soak in God’s presence too well. He was always doing something, helping people, and pouring out. Some of this was in the context of his different careers, some was in active ministry.
Tony was very curious and loved to have me read Bible passages to him and we would discuss it. But he wasn’t always like that. At one time, his heart had a HARD NO to God, since he was an atheist in his Royal Navy years and beyond. He says in a song he wrote about himself that he was King of himself, nobody’s fool. Yet he still had a heart for others in making them laugh, and to record videos for posterity (in the navy and for family/trips).
Tony LOVED music of all kinds, and had a passion for the Beatles. This love continued throughout his life, even when he was very sick. Tony also loved the internet and creating HTML websites. He helped various ministries set up basic websites, and he was a webmaster of so many, including Good News Christian Ministries and also ARM Canada. He was also a part of many boards, and was good at it. He loved his later careers of being a computer salesman when computers were huge, and later, a financial planner with Allied Dunbar and Investors Group. He loved each and every one of his clients and many became friends. He also dearly loved his children, James and Debbie. He remained close with James to the end.
Tony’s first yes to God was when he came to faith at a 1984 Luis Palau mission in London. Yet it was when he was in Canada that he discovered the Alpha Course. He was invited to the introductory session by our friend Bob Horsey multiple times. He finally accepted the invitation, because it included a roast beef dinner! After the session, Tony was hooked. Later on, he ran multiple Alpha Courses. By the time I met and befriended Tony, he was an important “Alpha man” in Kanata. After we married in 1999, I joined him in many Alphas, and we thrived in leading the Holy Spirit weekends. We both became Alpha Canada advisors in the early 2000’s, and attended an international Alpha advisors event at Holy Trinity Brompton in London.
I’ll now fast forward to 2005, when I had already gone on three Kenyan ministry trips. I was invited to Migori, to help teach the local leaders about the Alpha Course. This wasn’t official, but I did connect with Gathoni of Alpha Kenya. Tony kept saying NO to going on this invited trip. It took a lot of prayer, but when I left it with God, I went to Belleville to spend the weekend with a friend. Two days later, Tony called me and announced that we were going to Kenya! I asked him later what had happened, and he told me that he had an experience with the Holy Spirit that was like a spanking. He heard quite loudly in his inner heart and mind that Laurie-Ann had given up a full-time missionary ‘career’ to marry him, and the least he could do is to go with me to Kenya, and make my dream come true. After that, his hard no, said out of fear was gone. His yes became stronger. He thrived on that first trip and was in his element, teaching and leading the Alpha Course like a conference, while I shared additional talks. At the end of our time there, Tony told me, “Wow, this was so great. It really felt like a blessing. Maybe we should do this again.” At that moment, I heard the word “Sierra Leone,” which was the second time I received direction to eventually go there.
Five years later, we were speakers at two Alpha conferences near Freetown, Sierra Leone. This was the home of his spiritual mom, Emma. It was easy for Tony to say yes, and he was the lead of our team of four. After that, Tony “hung up his overseas hat” for a while (like a ‘been there, done that) and he focused on more local outreach, his lay ministries, and work. Through this time, he played his beloved guitar in many Alpha courses, and in Ottawa prison ministry that we did together on Sundays. He also became the worship leader at Blackburn Hamlet Community Church, and thrived there!
Fast forward again to 2016. I felt the full-time missionary calling again and attempted to apply for the Iris Harvest Mission School the previous year. We were inspired by the” Compelled by Love” documentary, that focused on the mission work of Rolland and Heidi Baker. I was urged by the registrar to reapply in 2016 with Tony. This was a wise decision since it was difficult for me with disabilities, but Tony was focused on helping me the following year. In fact, after we had a special outreach in rural Mozambique, Tony heard Holy Spirit’s still small voice whispering to him that part of his assignments was to take care of me, since there were many hearts and souls wrapped up in my life and ministry. He was to help me achieve my calling as long as he could.
Tony was slowly transformed during Harvest School. He basically went to the School to be with me and help me. However, God was softening his heart. He at first ranted that he didn’t want to be a full-time missionary, but by the end, through receiving spiritual gifts, tons of great teaching and encouragement, and a special outreach in a rural village, he changed his mind completely the other way. He told our house parents that he wanted to be a full-time missionary as his fourth career. I was there and was laughing because this is what I wanted. I was tired of dragging Tony to go beyond his comfort zone. We weren’t Rolland and Heidi Baker. God would use the gifts he gave US. We can’t be carbon copies of other people. We had a unique calling, which we discovered in South Africa’s Western Cape.
There are so many stories that I could tell that confirmed our call to this beautiful part of South Africa. You can look at our website Copples Western Cape dot ca to delve into that. We both had dreams, visions and encouragement for our extended outreach after Mozambique and we knew that we were called. Tony’s heart continued to expand even bigger. As God poured into him, he also poured what he was given into many children of different people groups – especially the township children of Avian Park. This is a dangerous township with gangs, drugs and so much violence.
However, he began being known as “Uncle Tony.” They saw that Tony LOVED their children, and so he was given grace with all the people there. I was given the same, but not as much as Tony. He was a real father figure to the orphan, fatherless, and brother to the widow. He would sing and play his guitar along with me in schools, children’s church, kids clubs, and Mailbox clubs set up in Avian Park homes. They would jump and sing along with the English and Afrikaans songs that we learned, and they would hang on every word he said.
We then trained teen girls to lead these Mailbox Bible Clubs and became mentors to them. This was quite challenging to us due to strong teen hormones, strong wills, a different culture and their dependence on Tony. One of these girls was “B,” who was strong in her faith, sweet but anxious in nature. We mentored her and sensed that this girl was the one who could go far beyond Avian Park township. She is amazing with kids, is very smart and she wants to be a teacher. She won a partial scholarship to a local Cape Town university, where she began to attend last year. Tony became her sponsor, yet he died 7 or 8 months before she would finish. Some of you know that we asked that in lieu of flowers, people could consider donating the cost they would spend on flowers that die, to help continue finish a part of Tony’s legacy. Tony believed in education, and Bella was one of Tony’s compelling passions that continued right to when he died. If you are interested, please let me know, and take one of the cards about Tony’s legacy with Bella.
We continued B’s mentorship even as we returned to Canada to care for my 94 year old dad. Sadly at that time, Tony decided to give up playing guitar. He knew he was sick, and was soon under the care of Toronto General and Princess Margaret hospitals. I researched the mesothelioma that we discovered, which was later confirmed. It turned out that the asbestos exposure that caused that illness was present in at least one the ships he was stationed on as a Royal Navy officer. He found that many of his classmates from Naval College began to die from strange diseases. I encouraged him and prayed with him during his cancer journey, just like Tony was there for me during my South African breast cancer journey.
It was so hard at times, and yet he continued to pour out to me, my dad, Bella and others. He didn’t complain except to his son James, who called often via Facebook Messenger. During worship times, I began to notice that Tony did not sing. He told me later than he just didn’t have the breath to sing, and it hurt his chest. But he listened with great joy.
The disease robbed him of his joy of life, and his desire to play the guitar. I was broken hearted at his decision to no longer play. Near the end of September, his son James flew in for a surprise visit over three days. I was not to say a word and spoil the surprise! During this visit, Tony and James worked on a forced upgrade from his old Blackberry to a new to him iPhone. However, James is also a musician, and he noticed his dad’s guitar in the basement. He took it upstairs and discovered that the bridge on the guitar had risen, so it was difficult to play. So he repaired it, restrung it with new strings, and shined up the body and neck. Both James and Tony played the guitar beautifully. However, when James flew home, Tony put the guitar away. It was the last time he ever played it – this beautiful, banged up guitar that had survived so many venues.
Then Tony began to breathe even more strangely, which turned out to be pneumonia in his good right lung. His breathing was now severely compromised, so life was even more difficult for him. He longed for heaven, and would tell me, but it was difficult for me to hear this. I’m sad that I was not with him when he died on Thanksgiving Monday – but I’m grateful for his love for Jesus, his greatest passion: greater than me, greater than the Beatles. Tony poured his life out in a good way – to glorify God. A few days after Tony died, I received a clear impression of Tony playing guitar in a heavenly worship team!! I was so comforted and elated. He is playing guitar again!! This guitar represents so MUCH. A life poured out. A life of love.
God is so worthy of it all. May I continue to pour out love, even in grief. Pastor Bill Johnson did the same when his beloved Benni died. He said that the praise offered in the context of loss is SACRIFICE. It means so much to God. When we are in heaven, there is no effort to worship. But in pain, the gift of thanks and praise to God means so much more. Jesus is worthy. He is worthy of it all.

Tony and L-A were part of a worship team called Kenosis from 2001-2006. Kenbits was a spin-off with Tony, L-A and Ron Betts. We played at the Unitarian Church on Cleary Ave in Ottawa a few years later. Ron came to the memorial to honour Tony, which was very special for him to make the drive when so many weren't able to do so (being on a weekday afternoon)!

CONDOLENCES
The meaning of condolence: When someone says, “Condolences,” it is not a throwaway line. I recently heard that con and dolence mean to share deep pain in one’s one heart. In other words, it means to SHARE the sorrow together. To properly grieve and say goodbye requires community. We are not an island. And we need God even more than community. Together, we are strong – in God and in how the Holy Spirit uses us as we stand or sit with one who has lost a loved one. And while I am still in shock mode (three weeks after Tony’s passing), what I notice most is Tony’s absence. I miss his presence, but I know where he is. And then there are all the legal details to come…. And the lack of the practical help he did for my dad and myself. I trust and pray that there will be those who can help me where I need it the most – the practical things. I guess you can tell that “acts of service” is one of my love languages? Blessings to all.

Watch over us who are still on our dangerous voyage, and remember such as lie exposed to the rough storms of trouble and temptations. Frail is our vessel, and the ocean is wide; but as in your mercy you have set our course, so pilot the vessel of our life toward the everlasting shore of peace, and bring us at the last to the quiet haven of our heart’s desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Ricardo Abrahams In prison, there is not just the number and franse. Bonds get made, brotherhood that last and friendship, that stood strong. I am sad that such a friendship, has been broken physically, but not in spirit. Tony Copple, you have let your mark, your memory will not fade, your name will always be remembered. You are with Abba Father and that give us peace. Laurie-Ann Copple, God is with you, he strengthen you, give you his wisdom and always guide you. The love you showed to inmates, is unspeakable and pure.
Rest in peace Tony Till we meet again

Amen.

Michael Munnik - Today, in Cardiff, my family celebrates (late) Canadian Thanksgiving with neighbours over for a meal and companionship. But I am sad to learn today that, on actual Canadian Thanksgiving, we lost Tony Copple, a friend, a supporter of my music, and a man of faith. I played a show at The Branch in Kemptville many years ago, one of the first performances of my song "Mercy", which Tony especially loved. I am so thrilled to have finally released the studio recording of "Mercy" with a massive coda, lifted up by a horn section. I reproduced it in St John Church, a beautiful setting, with the full band present. I would have liked to share it with him. I can share it with Tony's wife Laurie-Ann and hope the promise in the song sustains her. At that Branch show, Tony caught a brief snippet of me and Neil Gerster playing Neil Young's "Pocahantas" - a lovely memory.
Legacy Relay - A very sad week to hear about the passing of Tony Copple, a cherished member of Legacy Relay. Tony's dedication as a teacher and the impact he had on the children's lives is truly commendable. His legacy will forever shine in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Laurie-Ann and the entire family during this difficult time. Tony will be dearly missed, but his memory will be cherished always. #InMemoryOfTonyCopple #legacyrelay #generations

Carlos Fandango The day my daddy died.
When I was young my daddy always made things better. When I scraped my knee or got in trouble or my dog died, my daddy made me feel better.
The day my daddy died, I woke up, worried about work. I was worried about breakfast, and getting my daughter to school, and my dog’s red skin. I had an argument with my wife, I was angered by the news, I was angry at Palestinians and Israelis and climate change.
I got a text message, my daddy died. I was no longer worried about work, breakfast, school or my dog’s itchy skin. My wife hugged me and we forgot our argument. I wasn’t angry with the Palestinians or climate change anymore. My daddy made things better even in his death.
Laurie-Ann Copple Carlos Fandango love you

Rev. Karen Bergenstein (BHCC ret): I am so very sorry to hear of Tony’s death, Laurie-Ann. When I heard he had pneumonia I knew the chance of him surviving it was slim. While he has gone to be with the Lord, which is far better, his presence with us and especially with you will leave a huge whole in our hearts. Tony was a special and wonderful person, so giving of himself and willing to share his gifts with anyone in need. When he came to BHCC it was to fill in temporarily until we found someone else - out of the goodness of his heart - and didn’t leave until you went off to South Africa. He was always so encouraging to Pat and me and was well loved by everyone. I will do my best to come to the funeral. May the Lord bless you and keep you close as you mourn for your beloved husband. Grace and peace be with you, Karen.
Rev. Pat Coulombe: Oh, Laurie-Ann, I am so sorry to hear of Tony’s death. I can imagine the shock you had when you received that phone call. Even though we know our love ones have passed into glory the sense of loss for those left behind is enormous. I pray that you will have the comfort and peace of God poured into you and over you as you walk through this great loss.
As Karen stated in her email to you, Tony was a Godsend to us and to all at BHCC. He gave so willingly of himself and shared generously what the Lord had given him to share: his love of music and of people. Even though he had to travel all the way across the city to be with us I don’t ever remember him not being there - even on Sundays with rotten weather.
Laurie-Ann, I know you have some very difficult days ahead of you with lots of decisions to make. Please know that you will be in my prayers. You will both always be in my heart.
I have included this short message from 2 Corinthians 5. It is taken from the Message:
“For instance, we know that when these bodies of ours are taken down like tents and folded away, they will be replaced by resurrection bodies in heaven—God-made, not handmade—and we’ll never have to relocate our “tents” again. Sometimes we can hardly wait to move—and so we cry out in frustration. Compared to what’s coming, living conditions around here seem like a stopover in an unfurnished shack, and we’re tired of it! We’ve been given a glimpse of the real thing, our true home, our resurrection bodies! The Spirit of God whets our appetite by giving us a taste of what’s ahead. He puts a little of heaven in our hearts so that we’ll never settle for less.”
2 Corinthians 5:1-5 MSG
Praise God, Tony has left the tent and has entered into the very place that Jesus went to prepare for him.
Pierre and I both send our love. Blessings and hugs from your sister in Christ, Pat
Dalton and Claudette Black: Our sincere condolences on Tony's Passing. That, we were not expecting to hear for sure. He was always the health

Fred Milnes Laurie -Ann, I didn't realize the Lord had taken Tony home. I have some wonderful memories of our fellowship during the GDOP He was such a great help with the set up, finances and mostly, listening to God in our meetings. May our God of Comfort comfort you with the comfort only He can give that you may comfort others as God is comforting you. Blessings in Christ. Fred Milnes
Cindy Yendt Smiling remembering moments when Tony would tell me the things you love like iris' and tea and showing me pictures of you two that he had around the office, many other special things too L-A, fondly recounting how you met etc. smiling at the Joy you brought and shared.
Bill Prentice Hi, The best image is to imagine you are standing in the surf, only the cycle of the waves is random as is the wave height. So, sometimes, you are amidst little ripples, and then A tsunami comes. There will be moments when everything is okay and then moments later the grief and loss is overwhelming…. This is all normal…. And don’t be afraid to tell his story. Also, keep his life, his witness, and his relationship with you on your list of blessings. Just a few thots…. Also, sigh, prayers for you.
Sègula Bride My heart + Prayers are with you Prècious Swèetheart .. MISS you + so sàd to be so far from you, especially amidst this time

MISS you + so sàd to be so far from you, especially amidst this time
Pray our Bèloved Abba NÈSTLE you DÈEPLY amidst His Èver LOVING PASSIONATE FAITHFUL LOVE !!! Shalom Blèssings to you all round !!!

Dear Laurie-Ann, I was so very sorry to hear from you that Tony had died. I had not known him for long at Dartmouth – just a year when we served in the same Division. Then being an Electrical Specialist he disappeared with other clever people to Cambridge University in January 1959. We met up again mid 1963 in the aircraft Carrier HMS Ark Royal, when I shared a cabin with him, Mike Clarke and with the (now late) Vice Admiral Sir Robert Walmsley. I remember they was a concert onboard and Tony very cleverly recorded, then played back and over recorded (several times) a rhythm guitar piece – which when finished sounded like a whole band. It went down a storm with the ships company.
I am copying this email and your email out to the remaining 36 (out of 75!) surviving members of the term who I know will be saddened by the news. With kindest regards, Michael de Malpas-Finlay
Dear Laurie-Ann, Very sad to hear the bad news, although previous emails indicated that the news was not entirely a surprise.
I hadn’t seen Tony for many years but have very happy memories of sharing a house in Cawsand, over the border in Cornwall from the Royal Naval Engineering College at Manadon. When us electrical officers returned from sea for post graduate training at Manadon, they found that they had insufficient accommodation, so provided an option for us to live out on extremely modest allowances. Tony, myself and Ron Walmsley were among those who leapt at the chance and we found a delightful cottage in Cawsand where we lived for a few months. It was called Smugglers Cottage, which we were sure was appropriate, as it had a trap door in the kitchen floor that led to a cellar with direct access to the beach. We each drove Minis, which we had to park in the village car park, as the cottages had no parking and street parking was prohibited because the narrow streets. We ended up having to rush to catch the Tor Point ferry to get in to college in time every morning. Happy memories of long ago.
Please accept my condolences and sympathy, as I am sure Tony’s death will have been a very sad experience, even if not unexpected. Chris Dale (and Sue), from Australia.
Dear Laurie-Ann, I am very saddened to learn of Tony's death. Along with nearly 90 young cadets Tony and I joined the Navy (mostly RN but also some from New Zealand and Pakistan) on 14th September 1958. We had all been formally instructed by the Admiralty to join Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth (in Devon, south-west England) on that day by catching a certain train from Paddington, London.
All but two cadets duly caught the train. The two who didn't were - you've guessed it - Tony and I! I had missed a connecting train, but at this distance in time I can't remember what Tony's problem was! Anyway, we travelled down to Dartmouth, just the two of us, on the next train. We were extremely worried that this our first day in the Navy would also be our last! Absent without leave and all that!
We finally arrived at the College several hours after everybody else, but luckily nobody gave a damn! All our term mates were in the College chapel (it was a Sunday) and an ex-Navy concierge chap showed us to our quarters. We did not start our training till a few hours later! We actually did not see that much of each other in the year we spent under training together at the College before he went off to study electrical engineering at University.
But three or four years later we served together in the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in the Far East where we had a few adventures which I will NOT describe to you!! After that we occasionally met at naval reunions, although he actually left the Navy, I think, in the late sixties or the seventies so we never again served together in ships or naval shore establishments.
I remember him as a most amusing and likeable friend and I am only sorry that our paths did not cross much in later life. So sorry - RIP.
With best wishes, Mike Clarke

From Prison Ministry leaders/colleagues:
That [video slide show] tore my heart apart to work on that. I cannot imagine what you are dealing with. It just leads me to pray more for you.
I will be sending a written tribute [on the Glendale Funeral page]. It is taking me time to push through the grief. It helps to think of Tony playing in Heaven’s worship band now having a wonderful time. That is what our hope is all about.
Much love, Carl (and Wendy Wake)

A song by Tony: "My Life"
Words and Music by Tony Copple
(Chord sheet is separate)
Taught as a child of the Son and the Father
Holy Ghost also in trinity rule
Then in my twenties no more belief
King of myself, and nobody's fool.
Plenty of money; broke the commandments
Some in this world would declaime me
No satisfaction, something's a-miss
Jesus came back to reclaim me
Now I am changing, heart's rearranging
Lord, you were knocking at my door
Glimpses of beauty, smiling on me
I'm learning what I am here for.
Sowing the seeds in the fields of needs
Tending the lambs and seeking the lost
Joy of the worker, love of the friend
Harvest of soals - but at such cost.
As we come near you, though we still fear you
Fear of your majesty, awe of your power
We are your children, saved by your Son
Waiting in peace for that last hour.
